Dental Fillings Q & A

What is a cavity?

A cavity is a hole in the surface of your tooth caused by tooth decay. Tooth decay happens when plaque and food debris are left to sit on the surface of your teeth for too long.

Plaque contains harmful acids and bacterias that eat away at your enamel, and the longer they sit on your tooth surfaces, the more damage they can cause to your teeth.

You can typically remove plaque and food debris with simple brushing and flossing, but if they’ve been on the surface of your teeth long enough, they can cause irreversible decay.

If your tooth enamel has developed a cavity, Dr. Shenasi might recommend getting a filling to stop the decay and restore your tooth.

What is a dental filling?

A dental filling is a procedure to treat cavities caused by tooth decay. When you get a filling, your dentist uses a drill to remove all of the decayed material in your tooth, then fills the resulting hole with a special, malleable “filling” material.

At Dental Town DC, your dentist uses tooth-colored filling materials that have a similar color and translucency as your tooth enamel. This enables the team to treat your cavity and improve your oral health without compromising the aesthetic integrity of your smile.

What happens during a dental filling?

First, your dentist administers a local anesthetic to numb your tooth and the surrounding tissue. Next, they use a drill to carefully dig out all of the decayed material in your tooth. Once your tooth is free from decay, they clean and sterilize the hole and fill it with the tooth-colored filling material.

Your dentist then lets the filling material dry, sometimes using a special light to help it harden more quickly. Once the filling has dried, they make any final adjustments so that it feels just like your natural tooth, then sends you on your way with your newly restored smile.

Do dental fillings hurt?

Thanks to modern dental tools and anesthetics, you won’t feel any pain when you get your filling. At most, you’ll feel some slight pressure as your dentist works.

If you’re still nervous about your filling procedure, Dental Town DC offers a variety of sedation options to help keep you calm and relaxed throughout your treatment.
