What Is A Endodontist?

Endodontists are dentists who specialize in saving teeth. Endodontists do this through endodontic therapy procedures that involve the soft inner tissue of the teeth, called the pulp. The most common and well-known endodontic procedure is the root canal.

What Is A Root Canal?

Focusing on the nerves of the teeth, the specialty of endodontics is more commonly known by its most common procedure, root canal therapy. Commonly referred to as a root canal, this procedure replaces the infected pulp in the root canal with ultra-strong sealant.

The procedure is one of the most feared in general dentistry. However, root canals provide quick and thorough pain relief when the nerves at the root of the tooth have become infected and are inflamed. Most patients even say that their root canal procedure had the same level of pain as a simple filling – almost none. The best part is that this treatment can save your natural teeth and prevent the need for dental implants or bridges!

Signs You Need A Root Canal:

Root canals are done when the soft tissue, pulp, inside the root canal has been infected or inflamed. Symptoms of an infected or inflamed pulp include:

  • Sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures even after the heat or cold has been removed.
  • Severe toothache when chewing or applying pressure to the tooth
  • Darkening or discoloration of the tooth
  • Swollen and tender gums nearby the tooth
  • Recurring pimples on the gums

If left untreated these symptoms will continue to get worse and an abscess may develop.

Root Canal Procedure:

Root canals are fairly straightforward. After numbing the area, your dentist will drill into the tooth, exposing the canal. The infected tissue will be removed and the open canal will be thoroughly cleaned. The remaining space is then filled with an ultra-strong sealant, “gutta-percha.” To ensure long-term success, it is recommended that the affected tooth is fitted with a permanent crown. The entire process is designed to ensure little to no pain and is completed in just a couple of visits. Most patients find that any soreness afterward is generally minimal and is alleviated with over-the-counter pain medications.
